The Paseo Gateway project will soon offer a mix of apartments with exceptional amenities in a green community for entrepreneurial artists. Located in the historic Pendleton Heights neighborhood of Northeast Kansas City, Pendleton Arts Block is an art-focused community that will offer 38 modern apartments in a mix of 6 studios, 21 one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom units. It will be located along 2300 Independence Avenue, adjacent to the historic Independence Plaza Park.
A sustainable, Enterprise Green Communities certified mid-rise building, the property will feature an entrepreneurial arts workshop space, fitness center, community space, rooftop deck, in-unit washers and dryers, leasing office, bike storage, micro-retail bays at the ground level and enrichment housing services by the Mattie Rhodes Center. The Arts Block will rent apartment units at both affordable and market rates.
Pendleton Arts Block is an important phase of the Paseo Gateway revitalization strategy. The development is a partnership between Brinshore Development, the Housing Authority of Kansas City, Missouri, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, United Way of Greater Kansas City and Local Initiatives Support Corporation. The developer has partnered with the Charlotte Street Foundation to place three arts organizations in residency at the building for free for one year.
The Kansas City Society of Contemporary Photographers (KCSCP) organization is one of three arts organizations moving in to the new complex. This will be the organization’s first bricks and mortar location. The KCSCP hopes it can spread the appreciation of photography and put a camera in the hands of people who may have never held one. The other two art tenants getting space at Arts Block are the African American Artist Collective and the KC Public Theater.
Building the Arts Block was possible thanks in part to a $30 million grant the city received from federal agencies for its Paseo Gateway project to replace affordable housing in the northeast part of Kansas City.
